چکیده

As the penetration of intermittent energy sources grows substantially, loads will be required to play an increasingly important role in compensating the fast timescale fluctuations in generated power. Recent numerical modeling of thermostatically controlled loads (TCLs) has demonstrated that such load following is feasible, but analytical models that satisfactorily quantify the aggregate power consumption of a group of TCLs are desired to enable controller design. We develop such a model for the aggregate power response of a homogeneous population of TCLs to uniform variation of all TCL setpoints. A linearizedmodel of the response is derived, and a linear quadratic regulator (LQR) has been designed. Using the TCL setpoint as the control input, the LQR enables aggregate power to track reference signals that exhibit step, ramp and sinusoidal variations.

Modeling and Control of Aggregated Heterogeneous Thermostatically Controlled Loads for Ancillary Services

This paper presents a novel modeling and control approach for the aggregation of large numbers of heterogeneous thermostatically controlled loads, such as refrigerators, electric water heaters, and air conditioners, and their usage for Demand Response. Unlike traditional Demand Response methods that act on time scales of hours, this approach is able to provide short-term (e.g., second-to-second...

Object Oriented Modeling of Thermostatically Controlled Devices for Cold Load Pick - up

Problem statement: During service restoration, the power level at buses can significantly differ from the one presented under steady-state conditions, demanding an amount of electric power significantly higher than the normal load. Hence, their post-outage behavior must be adequately forecasted in order to permit the development of reliable restoration plans, or to avoid inadequate actions that...

Model-Free Control of Thermostatically Controlled Loads Connected to a District Heating Network

Optimal control of thermostatically controlled loads connected to a district heating network is considered a sequential decisionmaking problem under uncertainty. The practicality of a direct model-based approach is compromised by two challenges, namely scalability due to the large dimensionality of the problem and the system identification required to identify an accurate model. To help in miti...

Modeling, Control, and Stability Analysis of Heterogeneous Thermostatically Controlled Load Populations Using Partial Differential Equations

Thermostatically controlled loads (TCLs) account for more than one-third of the U.S. electricity consumption. Various techniques have been used to model TCL populations. A high-fidelity analytical model of heterogeneous TCL (HrTCL) populations is of special interest for both utility managers and customers (that facilitates the aggregate synthesis of power control in power networks). We present ...

Efficient Desynchronization of Thermostatically Controlled Loads

This paper considers demand side management in smart power grid systems containing significant numbers of thermostatically controlled loads such as air conditioning systems, heat pumps, etc. Recent studies have shown that the overall power consumption of such systems can be regulated up and down centrally by broadcasting small setpoint change commands without significantly impacting consumer co...
